Climate risk index. El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are among the countries most affected by the impact of weather-related loss events (storms, floods, heat waves etc), according to the latest Global Climate Risk Index (GCRI) by Germanwatch, an NGO based in Bonn, Germany. El Salvador was the fourth most affected country in 2011, after Thailand, Cambodia and Pakistan. According to the NGO, El Salvador registered a death toll of 35 people due to weather-related loss events: losses amounted to 3.69% of GDP. In terms of those most affected between 1992 and 2011, topping the list was Honduras which registered 60 such events, resulting in an average annual death toll of 329 and average annual losses of 2.84% of GDP. This was followed by Myanmar and then Nicaragua which registered a total of 44 events over the period, resulting in an average annual death toll of 160 and average annual losses to GDP of 1.89%.
