COLOMBIA: Tension builds within Uribismo

A rift is opening at the heart of Uribismo. The root cause is the failure of President Alvaro Uribe to clarify one way or another if he intends to seek re-election in 2010, 2014, or, indeed, at all. The most visible sign of strain was the public spat this week between former Senator Germán Vargas Lleras, the leader of Cambio Radical (CR) and a presidential hopeful, and Vice-President Francisco Santos. This could jeopardise the approval of a popular petition to reform the constitution to allow Uribe to seek a third term and important political and judicial reform bills which the government is trying to push through congress, for which CR support is essential.
