A rift is opening at the heart of Uribismo. The root cause is the
failure of President Alvaro Uribe to clarify one way or another if he intends to
seek re-election in 2010, 2014, or, indeed, at all. The most visible sign of
strain was the public spat this week between former Senator Germán Vargas
Lleras, the leader of Cambio Radical (CR) and a presidential hopeful, and
Vice-President Francisco Santos. This could jeopardise the approval of a popular
petition to reform the constitution to allow Uribe to seek a third term and
important political and judicial reform bills which the government is trying to
push through congress, for which CR support is essential.End of preview - This article contains approximately 498 words.
