NATURAL DISASTERS | State of calamity extended in Guatemala. On 7 December President Otto Pérez Molina extended for a further 30 days a state of calamity in eight departments  - Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Sololá, Quiché, Totonicapán, San Marcos and Huehuetenango  - following last month’s earthquake. The 7 November ‘quake’ - the strongest since 1976 - killed 44 people. The reconstruction costs are estimated at US$210m, according to the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
