Where to for the CAN?

While some members of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) - namely Colombia and Peru - have posted strong growth in recent years, the CAN as a bloc has failed to match this success due to a lack of effective integration. The emergence of the Pacific Alliance last year (which includes Peru and Colombia) sparked concerns about the future of the CAN, while more recently Bolivia’s efforts to join the rival Southern Common Market (Mercosur) has triggered speculation that the CAN may soon disappear altogether as its member states join other regional integration projects. This prospect is driving the CAN to speed up its more ambitious integration efforts. Even if the CAN eventually disappears, the push for greater integration by its members could ultimately benefit regional integration efforts as a whole.
