NICARAGUA-COLOMBIA: Areas of friction test both governments

The governments of Nicaragua and Colombia have been trying, on the one hand, to sound resolute before their domestic audiences regarding the defence of their maritime jurisdictions in the wake of the November ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and on the other to project abroad an image of respect for international law and abstention from any recourse to armed force. This balance is not easy given the range of issues on which friction is already increasing.
