ARGENTINA: Following in Chávez’s footsteps
In describing Argentina’s agreement with Iran over a joint investigation into the bombing of the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in 1994, President Cristina Fernández used the word “historic” repeatedly. Few question her description, but many Argentines, particularly among the country’s Jewish community, are sceptical the deal will lead to anyone being held accountable. Argentina will be involved in the questioning of Iranian suspects, but given the investigation will take place on Iranian soil, there is a strong suspicion a deal was cut more in the interests of geopolitics than justice.
