BRAZIL: Nightclub fire prompts soul-searching

Fires in sub-standard nightclubs are not a uniquely Brazilian, or even Latin American problem. One of the worst such accidents in recent history took place at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island, USA, in 2003. But the terrible fire on the night of 26 January that killed 235 people at the Kiss club in the southern city of Santa Maria has led to a bout of soul-searching in Brazil which will result in a strengthening of fire safety measures and tougher implementation, at least temporarily.
