MEXICO: Pemex disaster plays into Peña Nieto’s hands

President Enrique Peña Nieto’s call for a fundamental energy reform in Mexico was strengthened by a devastating explosion in the administrative headquarters of the state oil giant Petrόleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in Mexico City on 31 January which claimed the lives of at least 37 people and injured more than 100. Peña Nieto was too tactful to make the link explicitly, focusing instead on a rapid response from his cabinet to investigate the cause of the explosion.
