BRAZIL: PMDB takes senate and lower chamber

In a survey conducted by Transparency International last year, Brazilians put political parties and the legislature at the top of the list of the most corrupt institutions in the country. The election of Renan Calheiros, of the government-allied Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), as the president of the Brazilian senate, the country’s third-highest political office, is a good indication of why.
