Cafta-DR. The legislative assembly this week approved the final law - on intellectual property - required for the implementation of the Cafta-DR trade treaty with the US, ending more than a year of fierce resistance to the treaty from the opposition Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC). The government now has to complete a few administrative chores before the treaty comes into force on 1 January. President Oscar Arias was desperate to expedite the passage of the final law before the US President-elect Barack Obama, who has mooted amending Cafta-DR, takes office on 20 January.
