MEXICO: Calderón springs surprise with Gómez-Mont

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa appointed Fernando Francisco Gómez-Mont Urueta this week as the new interior minister to succeed Juan Camilo Mouriño, who was killed in a plane crash on 4 November. Gómez-Mont is a surprise choice for several reasons. Although he comes from the same traditionalist wing of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) as Calderón, he is not close to the president and thus breaks Calderón's habit of appointing friends to senior government posts.
