MEXICO | Gangsters. The army captured Jaime González Durán, one of the founders and leaders of Los Zetas, the specialist killers for the Golfo gang on 7 November. Besides capturing González (alias El Hummer), the army also managed to foil a plan to rescue him while he was being transferred to a federal prison. On top of this the army also seized the biggest cache of gang weapons it has ever found: this cache appears to be one of the arsenals of Los Zetas.
The government is, however, braced for a further increase in killing as González's lieutenants squabble for control. The government said that González has controlled the Reynosa drug-trafficking route to the US for the past three years. González served in the Mexican airforce for eight years before deserting in February 1999 to join up with Arturo Guzmán Decena and Heriberto Lazcano to form Los Zetas. Most of the original Los Zetas had served in Mexico's elite Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales.
