PERU: Vraem security operations subject to scrutiny

Peru’s comptroller general has launched a joint investigation with the country’s public ministry into possible corruption affecting Peru’s joint armed forces command (CCFFAA) after it discovered a series of irregularities in a security services contract signed by CCFFAA commanders in the valley of Apurímac, Ene & Mantaro rivers (Vraem) with a foreign security firm. The scandal has the potential to affect Peru’s military top brass as well as officials in the defence ministry. It has already refocused the public’s attention on the security forces operations in the Vraem, which since taking office President Ollanta Humala identified as the top security priority for his government.
