Cocaine seizure. On 12 March Costa Rican authorities seized more than a tonne (t) of cocaine on a speed boat off the Caribbean beach of Manzanillo, in the province of Limón, some 200km southeast of San José. Describing the seizure as “important”, the national anti-drugs commissioner, Mauricio Boraschi, told reporters that 50 25kg packets of cocaine were seized from the boat, whose occupants, believed to be Colombian, fled. According to the1 March 2013 report by the US State Department’s International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), the authorities seized 14.73t of cocaine in Costa Rica in 2012, up from 11.2t in 2011.
