New central bank president. Venezuela’s new president, Nicolás Maduro, named Edmée Betancourt the new central bank president on 22 April, replacing Nelson Merentes, who has moved to head up the finance ministry in the new cabinet. Betancourt, since October 2011 the commerce minister, was also Venezuela’s representative to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Association (FAO). Prior to that she was president of Venezuela’s bank for national economic and social development (Bandes), while in 2004 and 2005 respectively she served as the deputy minister for labour and industry and the minister for light industry and commerce.
