Little rejoicing over small improvement in Honduras

President Porfirio Lobo has decided to extend until end-January 2014 the state of emergency under which the military are empowered to act in a policing role amid a debate, even between the security forces, over the outcome of the February deployment of more than 500 troops to the streets of San Pedro Sula. What evidence is available points to a slight decline in both the overall homicide rate and that of the country’s most violent city.
