Just after US President Barack Obama concluded his short trip to the region, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro began a mini-tour of his own. If Obama’s trip to Mexico and Costa Rica was primarily concerned with trade matters, with security concerns pushed into the background (or at least behind closed doors), Maduro’s trip to Uruguay, Argentina and, as we go to press, Brazil, was ostensibly arranged to strengthen Venezuela’s relations within the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), with post-electoral concerns, which this week triggered a diplomatic spat between Venezuela and Peru, kept off the agenda.
