ECUADOR: Correa reshuffles cabinet and congressional leadership
President Rafael Correa has announced some key cabinet changes ahead of his inauguration for a new four-year term on 24 May. The most significant change will see Pedro Merizalde, head of the Pacific refinery project, replace Wilson Pástor as the new minister for non-renewable natural resources. This is going to be a pivotal ministry in Correa’s upcoming term. The long-serving president of the national assembly, Fernando Cordero, who had won a seat for the ruling Alianza País (AP), will also be moved on. Senior figures in the AP confirmed that he will be replaced by the young and dynamic Gabriela Rivadeneira, just 29, who will head an all-female congressional triumvirate.
