GUATEMALA | Another state of siege. In a move which has revived concerns about the current state of human rights in the country, President Pérez Molina declared a 30-day state of siege in four municipalities on 2 May. The measure is in response to violence caused by protests against the proposed Escobal silver mining project by Canada’s Tahoe Resources, which is located just outside the community of San Rafael Las Flores, in south-eastern Guatemala.
