On 7 May Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño, summoned the US ambassador to Ecuador, Adam Namm, to a private meeting at the foreign ministry in Quito where he expressed the unhappiness on the part of the Ecuadorean government with Namm’s participation in what the local authorities considered a “political act”. On 3 May Namm attended a public event in Quito organised by Ecuador’s national union of journalists (UNP) to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. As part of the celebrations, attendees were invited to write graffiti messages in defence of press freedom on a mural.
