GUATEMALA: Guatemala makes history

Guatemala’s justice system has become an unlikely role model. Last week the country made history as the first in the world to convict a former head of state for genocide in its own national courts. On 10 May, the former dictator, Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-3) was sentenced to 80 years imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity committed by the State during the 1960-1996 civil war.
