VENEZUELA: Mario-gate, part 1

In times of crisis, bravura. The president of the national assembly, Diosdado Cabello, called for “monolithic unity” in the ruling Partido Socialista de Venezuela (PSUV) in response to ‘mario-gate’,  as the local press dubbed a leaked audio recording said to be of a phone conversation between the Chavista TV personality, Mario Silva, and a senior Cuban intelligence official identified as Lt. Col. Aramis Palacios. President Nicolás Maduro said the Revolutionary forces would not accept “bribery or intrigue of any kind”, and threw his full weight behind Cabello. His career in tatters, Silva seems to have skipped the country for Cuba.
