REGION: Whirlwind weeks for Peruvian diplomacy

Peru’s foreign minister Rafael Roncagliolo has resigned for health reasons. President Ollanta Humala took umbrage at the suggestion by the opposition that this was a euphemism for dismissal and was adamant that Roncagliolo had indeed left his post because of health concerns. The opposition can scarcely be blamed for being sceptical. Roncagliolo has been embroiled in two diplomatic incidents with Venezuela and Ecuador in recent weeks. In the former case, Roncagliolo was on the receiving end of withering criticism from Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro; Humala conspicuously failed to offer public backing for his foreign minister.
