PERU | Mixed outcomes in law-enforcement operations. An antiterrorist operation in the Echarati district of La Convención, Cusco, in the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro valleys region (Vraem) left nine civilians injured by gunfire. A combined army-police unit acting on information that a group of Sendero Luminoso (SL) guerrillas would be travelling along the Kepashiato-Quillabamba highway on 6 May intercepted a minibus and opened fire. Initially the media reported police sources as saying that they had spotted a terrorist on the roof of the minibus who had fired on them. Later the official version was that the minibus had failed to heed an order to halt. The victims denied this and claimed that the vehicle had come under unprovoked fire.
