The leftwing opposition Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación
Nacional (FMLN) did not manage to secure the coveted majority of 43 seats in the
legislative assembly in elections on 18 January. It also lost the contest for
the mayoralty of the capital, San Salvador, a stronghold it had controlled for
12 years, to the rightwing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena). While this
will have been a bitter pill to swallow for the FMLN, it was the big winner in
the municipal elections as a whole, and it is this which provides the most
