ECONOMY: ‘It’s inflation, stupid!’

Stung by the latest polls showing a sharp and sudden drop in her popularity, President Dilma Rousseff was testy and defensive on 12 June as she unveiled a new scheme for the beneficiaries of the public housing scheme ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’. Announcing the new scheme, ‘Minha Casa Melhor’, which makes cheap credit available for the purchase of household appliances, Rousseff strongly denied that her government had lost control of inflation and public spending.  “It is very important that Brazil has a vision of the future consistent with its actual situation. The situation of Brazil is one of inflation and public accounts under control,” she said.
