The supreme justice court (CSJ) has agreed to absolve the former
president and unofficial leader of the opposition Partido Liberal
Constitucionalista (PLC), Arnoldo Alemán, of his corruption conviction,
releasing him from a 20 year jail sentence. Within a matter of hours, deputies
voted to give the presidency of congress to the ruling Frente Sandinista de
Liberación Nacional (FSLN): congress had been inquorate since November's
controversial municipal elections. Both developments showed that “el pacto", the
decade-old power sharing agreement between President Daniel Ortega and Alemán,
