Another student march. On 20 June in Santiago over 30 people were arrested and seven Carabineros were injured during student demonstrations led by private university students grouped under the Movimiento de Estudiantes de Instituciones Privadas (Mesup) and secondary school movements marching under the banners of Coordinadora de Cordones Secundarios and Asamblea Coordinadora de Estudiantes Secundarios (Aces). Unlike demos organised by the main confederation of university students (Confech) – which have seen turnouts of up to 250,000, the attendance at yesterday’s march was relatively low (an estimated 1,200). Another Confech-organised protest, the fourth this year, is scheduled for 26 June and is expected to attract support from other sectors like port workers. The increasing frequency of these demonstrations is becoming a headache for the government led by President Sebastián Piñera ahead of this November’s general election.
