Crash kills top military brass. On 20 June a Russian-made MI17 helicopter crashed killing all ten people aboard, including the head of the Nicaraguan air force, Colonel Manuel Antonio López García, and other high ranking officials such as the head of air force counter-intelligence unit, Lieutenant Colonel Chester Porfirio Vargas Martínez. The aircraft was returning from a military training session in the municipality of La Paz Centro, in the department of León, when it came down in Lake Managua (also known as Lake Xolotlán). According to a statement by the armed forces, a commission has been set up to determine the causes of the crash.
