Another ministerial resignation. Costa Rica’s decentralisation minister, Juan Marín Quirós, resigned on 28 June. He cited “strictly personal reasons” for his departure, but unlike the string of other recent resignations, including that of the communications minister,
Francisco Chacón, his exit does not appear associated with a scandal. Only seven of President Laura Chinchilla’s 23 original cabinet ministers remain in their posts; 16 have been changed since the government took office in May 2010. President Chinchilla has yet to name a replacement for Quirós. Separately on 28 June the mayor of San José, Johnny Araya, stepped down to concentrate on his presidential campaign for the February 2014 general election. Araya, who is running for the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), remains the favourite with 40.5% of voting intentions in a Borge y Asociados poll published on 23 May. Almost 32% of respondents were undecided/refused to comment, while Rodolfo Hernández of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) was on 9.6%.
