New mayor of San José. On 1 July Sandra García, the deputy mayor of Costa Rica’s capital San José, was sworn in as the new mayor after her boss, Johnny Araya, stepped down to concentrate on his presidential campaign for the February
2014 election. The campaign season officially begins on 1 October. Like her predecessor, who first assumed the post in 1998, García is a member of the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN). She will serve until 2016, when the next municipal elections are scheduled to take place.
