BRAZIL: Rio alarmed with ‘migration’ of crime from favelas

In the days before the countrywide wave of protests that attracted world attention, what had been fostering unease in Rio de Janeiro was the increase in episodes of violent crime in the more affluent districts, which is being attributed to the ‘migration’ of criminals from the favelas that have been ‘pacified’ over the past two years. Typical of the incidents fuelling this concern were several early-June violent robberies with multiple victims.
