REGION: Move over Correa, Morales takes centre stage

There has been a dramatic shift of focus in the saga surrounding the former US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden. After days of speculation surrounding whether Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa would grant asylum to Snowden, attention suddenly switched to Bolivia’s President Evo Morales after various European countries denied permission for his plane to use their airspace on his return from a trip to Russia, forcing it to divert course to Austria. The Bolivian government claimed that this was due to suspicion Snowden might be on the plane. The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) issued a strongly worded statement in support of Morales and individual governments expressed their indignation at what he was made to endure.
