EL SALVADOR: Gang truce under threat

A sudden surge in homicides is raising fears that violence could soon return to pre-gang-truce levels in El Salvador. Raúl Mijango, one of the mediators of the truce between rival mara gangs, struck in March 2012, insisted that it was just “a temporary crisis” which would be “overcome”. But this was belied by his own assertion that the recent removal of retired Generals David Munguía Payés and Francisco Salinas, as justice and public security minister and head of the national police (PNC) respectively, was at least partly responsible for the increase in homicides.
