GUATEMALA: Pérez Molina struggles with security

President Otto Pérez Molina has recently been forced to acknowledge that his efforts to combat insecurity – his chief campaign pledge ahead of the September 2011 election - are failing. His dismissal of national police (PNC) chief, Gerson Oliva, announced last month on the grounds that “change was needed”, followed the first ‘matanza’ (killing) attributed to narco-traffickers to take place since he assumed office in January 2012 as well as other signs that insecurity is on the rise.
