VENEZUELA: Chávez celebrates 10 years at the helm

President Hugo Chávez declared an impromptu national holiday on 2 February to celebrate the day when “the essence of Bolí­var re-emerged in our people 10 years ago and the peaceful Bolivarian Revolution and the people became the government" or, in other words, the culmination of his tenth year in power. Chávez used the day to showcase the achievements of his government over the last decade and, as such, it served as campaign propaganda before the all-important referendum to amend the constitution to allow continuous re-election on 15 February.
