New Labour Minister. On 24 July President Sebastian Piñera swore in
Juan Carlos Jobet as his new labour minister. He replaces Evelyn Matthei, who officially resigned on 22 July to run as the presidential candidate for the ruling
Coalición por el Cambio in the scheduled 17 November general election after the previous candidate Pablo
Longueira stepped aside for health reasons. A member of President Piñera’s Renovación Nacional (RN), the junior member in the coalition, Jobet initially served as coordinator of the interior ministry under the former interior minister (and now defence minister) Rodrigo Hinzpeter. Jobet was transferred to the post of deputy housing secretary in July 2011, a position he left in November to serve as campaign programme coordinator for the RN’s pre-presidential candidate, former defence minister Andrés Allamand (2011-2012), who was defeated in the 30 June primary contest. Matthei, like Longueira, hails from the senior coalition party, Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI).
