With legislative elections due in three months, President Cristina Fernández announced a 25.2% increase in the minimum wage on 25 July. The increase will be implemented in two phases, with the lowest legal salary rising to Arg$3,300 (US$600) as of August and Arg$3,600 (US$667) in January 2014. Fernández was keen to point out Argentina’s minimum wage is the highest in Latin America (see table). The president also announced that the half yearly bonus payment (known as the ‘medio aguinaldo’) would be paid on a tax-free basis.End of preview - This article contains approximately 707 words.
