VENEZUELA: Maduro and Capriles gear up for next test

President Nicolás Maduro and the leader of the opposition Henrique Capriles Radonski led rival marches in Caracas on 3 August to condemn corruption. They served as the unofficial launch of the next of Venezuela’s seemingly endless electoral campaigns: municipal elections on 8 December. Maduro proceeded to handpick several prominent TV and sports personalities to run in key municipalities. Capriles, meanwhile, gave a confusing message in which he accused the government of electoral fraud in last April’s presidential elections while encouraging supporters to vote in the municipal elections as the first step in a bid to remove the Maduro administration from power by constitutional means.
