ECUADOR | Export sector concerns. On 6 August the Federación Ecuatoriana de Exportadores (Fedexpor), a private export sector lobby, called on the government led by President Rafael Correa to offer “effective and immediate” compensations to the sector to counteract its decision to renounce the import duty reductions on Ecuadorean products offered by the US government via the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (Atpdea). Back in June the Correa government renounced Atpdea accusing the US government of using the agreement, originally set up to encourage Andean countries to carry out drug eradication and anti-drug trafficking efforts, to exert political “pressure” on Ecuador to do its bidding.
