Venezuela’s new defence minister, Admiral Carmen Meléndez, has started putting some flesh on the bones of President Nicolás Maduro’s proposal for a ‘military economic zone’. Meléndez said this week that the Bolivarian armed forces (FANB) would create an agro-production company (Agro-FANB) to become self-sufficient in food production before supporting the rest of the country; its own television company (TV-FANB); a heavy military transport company; and a bank (Banco-FANB), forming part of the national banking system, to protect “members of the military family”.
