Dormant unresolved boundary disputes are periodically resuscitated by politicians, usually nationalists, in one or both of the parties, creating situations with at least the potential to disrupt bilateral relations. Two such cases involving Andean countries have surfaced in the last half-year: the dispute between Colombia and Venezuela over the maritime boundary in the Gulf of Venezuela (Coquivacoa to Colombian nationalists), and the still undefined boundary between Chile and Argentina in the southern ice-bound sector of the Andes.
