HAITI: Security gains key to Martelly’s new priority

Haiti’s Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and Police Chief Godson Orelus recently boasted that Haiti is “safer today than it has been in past years” due to government efforts to strengthen the national police force (HNP). These claims appear to have been endorsed by the US State Department which last week softened its travel warning amid an apparent improvement in the security situation. While improved security is essential to President Michel Martelly’s new priority - attracting tourism as a means of boosting growth - doubts persist as to the veracity of his government’s claims.
