BOLIVIA: Morales to field ‘patriotic defence committees’

The government of President Evo Morales has announced that it will create ‘patriotic defence committees’ which will embody the ‘strategic alliance between the armed forces and the people’ — the latter to be represented by the ‘social organisations’ — to defend Bolivia from both external and domestic threats. Though scant details have been provided about the structure of these committees, what has been seen so far suggests that it will not be similar to that of the militias created in Venezuela.
