NICARAGUA-COSTA RICA: Ortega’s quip on recovering Guanacaste sours relations

The headlines proclaimed that Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega had threatened to go before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to demand the return of Guanacaste, which has been part of Costa Rica since 1824. It is not clear whether he was talking in earnest or merely getting carried away in a tirade against Costa Rica. Either way, it has already led to demonstrations in Managua that forced the closure of the Costa Rican consulate and the recall of the Costa Rican ambassador.
