VENEZUELA: Merentes goes off message

“This is a government approved in 18 elections, which has had success on the social side, but has yet to have success on the economic side”, Finance Minister Nelson Merentes told the government-leaning local channel Televen this week in an unusually candid interview by one of the Venezuelan government’s most senior officials. Even more candidly, Merentes seemed to take a swipe at his Marxist predecessor, Jorge Giordani, in outlining his suggested remedy. “All the knots must be undone”, he declared.
