Quinoa exports soar. On 3 September Peru’s foreign trade & tourism minister, Magali Silva, revealed that Peruvian quinoa exports in the first seven months of the year had reached US$27m, a 61% increase compared to the same period last year. The result shows that global demand for the Andean grain, classified as a ‘superfood’ due to its high nutritional value, has significantly increased during its international year. At the beginning of the year the Unite Nations declared 2013 as the International Quinoa year in a bid to promote the food which, it believes, can be adopted as a staple across the world in a bid to combat hunger and promote global food security.
