At the end of last month a supreme court of justice (CSJ) magistrate announced that over 30 constitutional appeals had been filed against the 13 June law (840) granting the Hong Kong-based HKND Group a 50-year concession to build and operate the US$40bn inter-oceanic ‘Gran Canal’ project – Nicaragua’s biggest ever investment project [RC-13-06]. While the appeals are unlikely to prosper in the CSJ, which is controlled by President Daniel Ortega, objections to the project have become a potent rallying point for the ever fractious political opposition.
