In Brief - Mexico

POLITICS | NGOs pressure senate over Ifai reform. On 28 September, NGOs including México Infórmate and Colectivo por la Transparencia urged Mexico’s senate to approve a bill reforming the Instituto Federal de Acceso a la Información (Ifai) aimed at making it more independent and transparent. The reform bill was sent down to congress by the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto last year as part of its anti-corruption agenda. However, while it was approved by the chamber of deputies in August, it has been been stuck in senate, which has yet to analyse the version of the bill approved by the lower chamber. The call by the NGOs coincided with International Right to Know Day, established in 2003 to raise citizens' awareness of the public's right to access government-held information.
